Instagram Vs. Pinterest Vs. Tumblr, How Do They Benefit the Photographer

Instagram + Pinterest + Tumblr = Photographers Best Friend

As a photographer you find any means necessary to get your work out there into the world, but do you know the difference between the various social media platforms? Today the focus is on Instagram, Pinterest, and Tumblr. Which one does what and why should you use them.

Instagram is an online photo-sharing, video-sharing, and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, apply digital filters to them, and share them on a variety of social networking services, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Flickr. A distinctive feature is that it confines photos to a square shape, similar to Kodack Instamatic and Polaroid images, in contrast to the 4:3 aspect ratio typically used by mobile device cameras. Users are also able to record and share short videos lasting for up to 15 seconds. Launched October 2010.

Pinterest is a visual discovery tool that people use to collect ideas for their different projects and interests. People create and share collections, called "boards", of visual bookmarks, called "Pins", that they use to do things like plan trips, develop projects, organize events, or save articles and recipes. There is also a like feature to save certain pins that may not fit with board. Launched March 2010.

Tumblr is a micro blogging platform and social networking website. The service allows users to post multimedia and other content to a short form blog. Users can follow other users' blogs, as well as make their blogs private. Much of the websites features are accessed from the "dashboard" interface, where the option to post content and posts of followed blogs appear. Launched February 2007.

If you are a photographer that pays very close attention to detail Instagram wouldn't be the best way to get you work out. The image is way too small to show all of the greatness in your photos. If you are more of a demostrative photographer then Pintrest would be a great place to sell yourself especially if your images can easily be understood and use in daily life. Tumblr is great for any type of photographer. You can not only post the photo but you can add quotes, maybe a video of your photo shoot, add a link to your photography website, and actually chat with people interested in your work. Tumblr might just be one of the best ways to get your work out into the to world because you can share that post on other social media platforms.
